IBC Tote Food Grade Storage, Large Enough for Many Uses – $100 each
These are High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Tanks in a steel frame on a pallet base. They are labeled as recycled because the steel frame has been used more than once, however the plastic tank has been replaced. The plastic tank has only been used once and only contained a food grade material.
These Tanks are so clean they only need to be rinsed out.
You can use these tanks for:
- Water Hauling
- Water Storage
- Rain Barrels
- Animal Feed Storage
- Aquaculture – Fish Farming
- Fuel Storage
- Septic Tanks
- Trash Bins
- Firewood Bins
We’ve even had a few people cut a door in the sidewalls and use them as goat houses and dog houses. With the customizability of the Steel frame and the weather proof aspect of the Plastic Tote, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.
My Personal Favorite is to use them for Aquaponics which is the combination of fish farming and hydroponics . . . when you come out ask about the aquaponics if you’d like and you can see my system I built from 3 totes.

IBC Tote Specifics:
- 275 Gallon HDPE Tote
- Used once and only for food grade material. HDPE is ideal because it’s known for it’s large strength to density ratio, giving it more tensile strength. Additionally it doesn’t release BPA through leaching.
- Steel Frame
- We have various types, some are tubular and some are square steel. Both are equally as strong. And both come on a pallet style base.
- Large Fill Cap
- The large fill cap on top has a 2″ pipe threaded plug included. You can tap into this for various applications.
- Ball Valve
- At the bottom of the tank you’ll find a ball valve for emptying the tank. The valve has various connections. It may have 2″ pipe threads or 2″ coarse threads
So let’s get to the real question here.
What was in these Totes?
HDPE Plastic is generally considered safe to use and BPA free and all that. But the plastic can still retain residual amounts of whatever was inside this container. Then over time when you fill it up with some other liquid the plastic can leach back other contaminants that were previously home to the tote.
This is why it is EXTREMELY important to know what was inside your Totes.
So the Product that was in this tote previously is:
e(Lm)inate LAD
What is it? This product is referred to as a Vinegar Alternative. It is made by Hawkins Food Group and is utilized as a antimicrobial solution in the production of Meat and Poultry. It is listed as a clean label vinegar option, it is a formula providing a cleaner flavor with less residual affects.
For full disclosure this is made of: potassium lactate, potassium acetate and sodium diacetate FCC
You can visit the product page on Hawkins website: http://www.hawkinsinc.com/groups/food-ingredients
The label is attached to the listing. As you can see it has a zero in all categories and only a “C” in personal protection as caution should be taken. Even vinegar is acidic, so I would assume this has similar properties. With this label in place you should have no problem running by the car wash on your way home and rinsing these out.
